Accessibility and social media

I stumbled upon an incredible, free resource that will help us all get better at social media: https://www.accessible-social.com/

Already, I am learning things to do or avoid to make sure social media content is more accessible for people with disabilities.

Screen capture from this link: https://www.accessible-social.com/

The image shows the navigation bar and highlights the section called "Accessible Learning." Icons and links show the following categories to click: Why accessibility matters, hashtags, links and hypertext, plain language, formatting, and emoji.

For example, this website calls out a current trend in Instagram captions. The original poster adds special fonts to emphasize certain words or make them more visually interesting than the default Instagram text. The problem is that some accessibility devices and programs skip over text like this, which reduces the readability of the caption.

I’m so excited about this guide, and I hope you find it helpful!

StoryCenter: An inspiring resource for nonprofits

One of my goals is to become a better brand storyteller for the nonprofit organization I work for, and a classmate from my master’s program at Purdue University suggested I look into StoryCenter.

Honestly, I had never heard of it before. As I dove into the StoryCenter website, I encountered inspirational videos from across the country.

One particular video stood out immediately because I work at an organization that has to be very careful about protected health information and including children under 18 in any marketing.

Part of my vision is to “pass the mic” so others’ voices of resilience, of their authentic, personal experiences, are heard with less filter. This simple, low-budget video is not only aspirational for me, but absolutely achievable with a media release and organizational approval.

StoryCenter is a great resource for storytelling examples and also offers workshops. I’m bookmarking this resource, and I hope this post helps other nonprofit marketers with limited resources.

Nonprofit brands and metanarratives

In 2020 and 2021, I pursued a master’s degree in communications at Purdue University. At every opportunity, I researched nonprofit-related topics to apply what I learned in my work.

This video was a final presentation from one of my classes. It includes clear-cut guidance for nonprofit communicators who want to strengthen their brand.
